Magali Feys Post Webinar Recap

Transcript
I want to thank you for participating in the webinar. I believe we had really engaging conversations with the panelists and viewing all of your questions, which are over 900 questions. I think it's a great response and we will come back with answers to those questions. Moreover, I also received some wonderful comments with regard to the analogy I used and therefore, I wanted to come back on that and explain it a little bit more. It was asked if Data Protection by Design should be used on a day to day basis, I believe so. I believe that it should be embedded in business processes.

Let's face it, we are wasting a lot of data. From a historical point of view to use a lot of data because the thing was, or the phrase use was, you never know which data you're gonna need, and therefore just give it all to us. But that's really ineffective. It is like brushing your teeth, and letting the water tap run. While brushing your teeth, you're not in need of the water, and you're just spoiling and wasting the water. That's the same thing that happens with the data.

Now, if we would use techniques like Anonymisation, and Pseudonymisation, how would that look? Well, Anonymisation would actually enable you to turn off the water tap whilst brushing your teeth. When you want to rinse your mouth, you put the tap on and you get like two or three sips of water to rinse your map. Now, in some cases, if you're using a good toothpaste, that might be enough, and that might be the solution. But in a lot of cases, you will say this is not enough or because when you are brushing your teeth with the whole family and you might need more water. That's Pseudonymisation for you. Because although you receive those two or three drops, you can then decide how much water do I actually need? Am I using this toothpaste and I need more water to rinse my mouth? You can really go to that amount of water and that liquidity you can also achieve with your data.

If we say that data is the new gold, then we don't want to waste our gold, we really have to start rethinking how we use that data. If we do it in such a controlled way, I believe that it already will go a long way in really implementing Data Minimisation and embedding Data Protection by Design in your normal business processes.

Yes, it will take some effort, but you will see in the long run, you will have data that you can use for more purposes and really for the purposes you need and not waste for the data.
